The Russians' Sputnik 1, October 1957. I remember it.

The Russians and Americans both wanted to have ICBMs that could deliver H-bombs. America found out how to build lighter bombs. Russia couldn't, so they had to build bigger rockets.

Sputnik, launched by the Russians on Oct 4th 1957. Originally designed to carry all sorts of scientific equipment, problems with supplies and manufacture forced the Russians to launch a simple probe that transmitted a beeping noise from space.

Sputnik, meaning 'Travel Companion' would have been beaten by the Americans, but problems with equipment reliability and politics let the Russians win the first race.
