Does anyone have any good lesson plans activities for 5th grade that go along with "The Raven"? I need some activities to help decipher tone and mood...

Thanks

No offense, but "The Raven" is fearly dark for fifth graders. Unless it is ordered by the school i would skip it. Otherwise I would check with the Edgar Allen Poe Society.

My dad and my brother learned all 18 stanzas of that poem by heart when he was only 10. I still remember his reciting it to the 9th grade english class in the nearby highschool.

No lesson plans here, but a dramatic reading might be a good idea. Also defining some of the word migth be a good idea. Plutonian, Quaint, Quaff, Balm, Nepenthe... all are a little bit above a 5th grader's vocab level. Then followed by a targetted discussion of what happens int he poem. Getting the kids involved in talking about what each stanza means migth work too.

But I'm just shooting in the dark. Best of luck

I agree with the other answer that "The Raven" is pretty deep for fifth graders.
Mood--go through each stanza and have them list the "dark" words.
