Best Books are:
Writers' Market (so you can see who is buying what)
Dialogue by Lewis Turco
Characters & Viewpoint by Orson Scott Card

(all books in the Fiction Writing Series from Writer's Digest Books)
Characters & Viewpoint is a really good read.
A writing exercise that will help you is pick a book you like and copy the first three pages by hand. You'll see exactly how the author did it. The setting, the character development, and the beginnings of the plot are all there.
Then you apply what you learned to your own writing.

Read and read some more! Write every day and join some on line writing groups. Join any groups that will encourage you to write and read a lot about writing to keep the enthusiasm high. The best way to become a novelist is to write your novel. Worry about writing it correctly the next time around For now, just write it. I am a published author and have been in the thinking stage, and got caught up there too many years. Someone forgot to tell me to just write my book!

First, come up with a nice poem or story. Once you find your idea, go to a nearby college, bookstore, or newspaper and enter it into a publishing contest or just see if they are interested in it. If not, don't worry, keep trying and go on!
