If someone has your IP address can they find out your address? Or does it just give a general location, like city and state?

Well, I think they can do a Ping of your IP address, but all that would come up would be which service provider you have, example, Pacbell, Earthlink, etc.

To get your actual name and address, the only way they would know would be if they contacted your internet service provider and got that information from them.

Also, believe if you have a static IP address and host your own server, your actual name might come up, but as long as you are going through a service like Earthlink, Yahoo, AOL, etc, it should be pretty private.

Good luck.

Don't worry; it would be remarkably difficult to get your actual home address. But a few factors to consider: do you have a static or a dynamic IP address --- if you do not know the difference, then you most likely have a dynamic IP which changes every time you log onto the internet. Dynamic IPs are even more difficult to trace.

Regardless, the name and location of your ISP is the only information any typical user will be able to harvest out of an IP trace.

Hope that helps!

No they can't see where you live but an IP Address does give away your country and it does point to your service provider (ISP). If such an ISP is not well established (i.e. country-wide) then this info alone could easily give a generic indication to a particular state/ cities or areas in which it operates.
Moreover, if a person were somehow to have access to that ISP's database, whether by hacking, by an insider in that organisation or even legitimately (governments/police/tax officials not to mention cia/mi5 etc., have that power), then they would probably get access to your personal info which your ISP must obviously hold for billing purposes.

I could.

It took one phone call and two e-mails, but the last time I traced someone via IP address I got not only their physical address, but the cubicle they were using at the office. And that didn't even require help from law enforcement.

The internet isn't anonymous. If someone is serious enough and skilled enough, then yes. They can track you down.

That would depend. A regular hacker wouldn't know. A person that has access to your Internet Service Provider's confidential data would be able to match your IP against your personal information. There are strict protection policies in place, so unless it's the Police or another government institution inquiring about it then you are safe.

It depends if your ISP, has a system where the IP address changes regularly then it would be harder. I'm sure there are some ways tho.

They can get as far as the city you're in but that's it. An actual address requires your ISP to release it. If they're bold enough to bribe someone who works at your ISP then yes they can find out where you live.

They can find out where the server you use to get online is at. Not your home.
