They are called palindromes. If you search that on google.com, you'll find many sites. Here is just one:

yep.. as a word guy.. love them palindromes.

for single words.. madam... would be another. The fun ones come when you can do a whole sentence that way. The classic one is:

A man, a plan, a canal... Panama..

They are called palindromes - racecar, mom, dad, - there are full sentences, as well - there's one about Panama that I can't recall right now.
