"Please Stop Laughing at Me," By Jodee Blanco. It is about a girl who is picked on through her school years.

"Smashed, " by Koren Zailckas. It is about a girl who drank too much throughout her formative years.

"The Glass Castle, " by Jeanette Walls. It is a memoir about a very strange upbringing.

"A Child Called It," By Dave Pelzer. It is about extreme child abuse.

I've read all four and really enjoyed them. I did not read "Running with Scissors," by Augusten Burroughs, however, it is supposedly very good as well.

Just so you know, Prep is actually fiction. It reads like a non-fiction, so I can see where there could be some confusion. I just don't want to you to read it for school and not receive full credit because it is fiction.

"The Devil in the White City" - kind of a true crime/history book, takes place in Chicago

"I Remember Julia: Voices of the Disappeared" - History, takes place in Argentina, very moving

Subject matter may be a little more mature than some would consider appropriate for an 8th grader, but they are very readable and the writing itself is not beyond 8th grade.

"Night" by Elie Wesel (I'm not sure if I am spelling his last name correctly). It is about a boy and his family during the Holocaust. It might be kind of heavy for 8th graders, but it is a shorter book. I read it sophomore year of high school for English and again freshmen year of college for History.
