I once read that speech came about because during the ice age it became too cold to expose bodily appendages that would have been used to do a rudimentary version of sign language. So grunts and other noises were used to try and communicate.

Society in general invented words, language is a socially constructed reality. The purpose of words is to communicate so if there was no society words would have no more meaning than thoughts. However once used to communicate they gain meaning.
