They were the first four rulers - really caliph means "deputy" or "successor" or "inheritor" - of the Islamic world after Muhammad, who founded Islam. The Princeton University site gives a full history, a map showing their changing territory and tells you the meaning of some important Arabic words relating to their rule. The BBC World Service site has audio files telling the stories of the caliphs and their world.
