If you had these employment issues, what would you do?

I work at a small family owned company. My boss is the owner of the company, there is no higher or lower. I've been working here over a year; I have experience in the field since 1998. I have 3 years of college and other training classes in many fields. Despite everything and my qualifications, I spend most of my time filing or answering phones. One time I even was asked to make the owner’s son’s pictures into book form (cutting, copying, pasting into the format). One of the owners is prone to tantrums and throwing things across the room for giving him a phone call.

I wake up sick to my stomach at the thought of coming to work and there are nights where I wake up in cold sweats after nightmares from work. Since working here I am sick at least once a month (hospital sick, not just a cold) and I had horrible stomach acid, I cant sleep, I cant even focus on home life.

I’ve become increasingly depressed and get horrible headaches and body aches.

I am completely under appreciated and I do the meaningless jobs and they trust me with nothing. They've said I'm not smart enough to do certain things. I've had to completely change the way I dress, my hair, and my make up, even my perfume for them. (My boss doesn’t like coconut and I was wearing too much black).

I just found out if I quit I couldn’t get unemployment benefits to help look for a new job... I currently go to college fulltime as well as everything else.

I work pretty much 7 am - 6 pm them I have school. I don't have free time to really hunt for a job while I'm working here, but because of school I cannot afford to not have a paycheck...

What do I do??? What would you do????

A couple more things:

I live in Alaska so most career sites suck for job hunting.

Also, I go to school online in Iowa so there is not a career counselor or anything.

To add to things, I do not drive. I do not have a license and with snow coming I cant get one until summer anyway.

Your goal is of course to end up in another job as soon as possible. You have already started a list of problems that you will have to overcome to get this job. Start by finishing the list of things that stand between you and another job. For each problem list actions - even small ones - that will lead to solving that problem. The fact that you are working on leaving should help. Taking actions - no matter how small - leading to a new job will help you deal with the day to day crap you are putting up with. You should tell yourself that each day is one day closer to my new job. Make plans for what you will do - wear - etc at the new job. Don't let your current situation work on your head. If you have a goal directed life then it will be easier to handle each day. The worst thing you can do is to spend all of your time telling yourself how bad it all is. Go right to work on some real action that will lead to better things. Good luck.

I am kind of in the same boat. I cant stand my job! Where do you live in Alaska? My dad owns a company there, I don't know if they are looking for any office help though? Anyway, just quit if its making you sick! It is scary, especially since you haven't had to look for a job in a long time. Good luck! Hope everything turns out great.

You should only work for someone who appreciates you and what you do for them. At my last job, I did all my work and even my boss's work while he takes credit for it. When there's something wrong, I get all the blame. It took me one year to get the experience and leave that company. Everyone there knows what's going on, even the CEO. At the end, I've realized that happiness is more important than money. After I quit, it took me 2.5 months to get my current job. I'm currently working for a small family owned company, but everyone here is very nice. My boss is very generous too. He matched the same salary that I received at my last job and gave me two bonuses each year.

As for your situation, you should quit your job, apply for financial aid or a student loan to finish school, and continue to look for a job while you're unemployed.

Not that you should listen to me. But I quit my dream job over the tantrums and verbal abuse one manager was doling out to other people. I was a new hire, I saw what was happening, and I got out BEFORE he started on me, which I am sure he inevitably would have.

I woke up with churning guts and a desperate feelings every morning after a 'honeymoon' of about a week.

So I say leave. I have known people who got very ill from what work dealt them. One guy I know got so sold out at his work, so abused, he is now battling cancer. I can't help but feel stress caused it, or contributed to it. It just wore down his outlook and immune system and you name it. You can't feel like dirt every day and it not effect your PHYSICAL health. That's my message to you.

Best of luck.

I would not quit without having another position in hand, but your current position certainly sound like a dead end job. It also appears to me that you have a problem handling stress.

Get busy and start finding yourself another job and learn to relax a little. Take up bird watch.

Hello!
I totally understand your situation. I suggest you post your resume online like monster.com and omit your present employer from viewing your resume under Privacy Plus while you're still working there. Employers will start calling you! You'll be so happy you did! I hope you find something better where you will be an integral and valued employee/team member!

if you have disability insurance, i'm sure you could get a doctors note for stress related to work. at least that would give you a break and some time to find another job. good luck.
