We stayed at Doelen Hotel in the city centre. It´s near Muntplein (Munt Square) on the river Amstel very near the most famous pedestrian street there; when you book, ask a room facing the canal, really nice. We tried to get lost but we always saw the upper part of the hotel with its name in it from most places!! You can get there walking from Central Station (you can get a train from the airport to Central Station); when we arrived, we got a taxi, as we didn´t know whether it was far or not, but when we left, we went to Central Station on foot (a 10 minute walk). Another good one is Schiller Hotel which is in Rembrandtplein (Rembrandt Square); it faces that square which is quite quiet. It has a wonderful recommended brasserie. Both of them are centrally located and they are about 500 metres one from the other so just check prices.

Close to my home is hotel Albert. It looks very friendly and i think is reasonably priced. It is in the Pijp close to the centre of Amsterdam. about 40 - 80
The Amsterdam Botel seems to be okay. Near the Central Station a floating hotel located in the city centre. about 70 - 80 euro I think.
The Apple In Koninginneweg 93 is a tourist-class hotel. The hotel is located in the cultural area of Amsterdam, opposite the famous Vondelpark. Most of the famous tourist attractions, such as the Concertgebouw, Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum are within walking distance of the hotel. Not so close to the famous Grachten (Amsterdam canals)
A bit more off centered, but cheap and clean is the Franciskaner hotel San Luchesio. The hotel was founded by a Franciscan Third Order Foundation. It still welcomes religious people especially, but all tourists are welcome.
But of course it depends what you think is reasonable.
Backpackers would choose Hansje Brinker. A hostel. No view, no big rooms, but clean beds. Address Kerkstraat 136 1017 GR AMSTERDAM

get a train from the schiphol airport to the central station. it takes about 10-15 minutes.
the hotel is right accross the street on your left from central station and at the very beginning of the famous red light district, within a walking distance from all museums and interesting stuff(flowers, souvenirs, etc)
the hotel is situated in several classic old houses, renovated but kept the spirit of the old dutch! the staff is friendly also, it's very clean and it is safe!

i do no longer probable like the midsection city section as a place to stay. for great-funds * walk united statesthere are a number of on raadhuistraat that are no longer to undesirable. I stayed on the lodge Ronnie in 1992 whilst i replaced right into a destructive college student. the lodge sint nicholas (sp? at spuistraat 1a) is a nicer lodge in a greater constructive nitch of the midsection city yet is pricier. i truly often stay close to wetering-schaans and that's handy to the musuems, nightlilfe, and each thing else by employing the trams.
