The Jamaican government and people found themselves unable to make daily ends meet due to the oil price increase in 1973, and in 1976 the economy began un unravel as the country could not finance their basic needs such as health care and food. The government needed large sums of money, and the IMF lent the money which was to be paid back in a short time frame with a very high interest rate. As a result of these loans, the World Bank and IMF put restrictions on the Jamaican economy over what they could, and could not do. IMF insisted that the Jamaican currency be devalued, and decrease their exports while increasing their imports. The economy became controlled by foreigners due to the mechanism of debt.

So to answer your question, yes. And the United States is doing NOTHING to help Jamaica’s failing economy. The consistent import of cheap American and other foreign produce, milk and meat means that imported food is cheaper than Jamaican farmed food; therefore Jamaican farmers are not able to sell in their own market.

Jamaica isn't a 3rd world country. Just because you got food poisoning there doesn't make it one either. Besides look at how many people get food poisoning in the US. Does that make us 3rd world? Of course not.

There are VERY few 3rd world countries out there now compared to say 25 years ago even.

As a Jamaican, I can tell you for a fact that Jamaica IS a 3rd world country.

However, there is absolutely no correlation between 3rd world countries and food poisoning. One can suffer from food poisoning anywhere in the world, including the U.S.
