Depends. Some people study better with music, some study better without. If you are the type of person that studies better with music, the kind of music that you listen to may influence you in a good or bad way. Say you like the song "Lose Yourself" by Eminem (for example, he's OK but not a favorite) very much and you know all the lyrics by heart. That in particular is a song that has very specific and complicated lyrics. While studying you may catch a part of the lyrics and get caught up in thinking more about the lyrics coming up than the work at hand. Now let's say you listen to classical music as one person suggested. There are no lyrics and it is a very smooth kind of music. You have less of a chance of being distracted by soothing violins than by a good beat. Probably even less so with the sound of the ocean in the background. The idea is that you want something not necessarily monotonous, but not something too attention grabbing either. Classical music seems to be a perfect mixture.

The type of music you listen to will not, I repeat will not affect your studies. The loudness of the music will have an adverse affect. The ideal music volume is so the music is a background. That is you can think without interruption and you can speak without having to say "HUH?"
There have been studies done and they have shown the type of music does not affect the study process.

Oh, jeez, what is it with all you psych majors?!? My bf is studying his psychology right now while listening to satanic death metal. He was already weird years ago, though, so don't know if it will change you.
