The spacing between contour lines is an indication of the slope of the terrain. The closer the lines are together, the steeper the slope. If you find 5 contour lines running together into one thick line, for example, you can be sure there is a steep cliff or rock wall. Conversely, if the contour lines are spaced apart, the terrain is fairly level. Depending on the contour line scale intervals (200 feet, 100 meters, etc). A key in the corner of the contour map will give you the contour line intervals.

on a map? how steep the incline or decline is. if they're closer together, the slope is steeper.
