4x4 means four wheels can be driven from the transmission. 4x2 means only two wheels can be.
All-wheel-drive almost always means all the wheels are driven from the transmission all the time, also known as full-time four wheel drive.
Automatic four wheel drive usually means the vehicle will automatically shift into 4 wheel drive within a matter of milliseconds.
Note that traditional 4 wheel drive (4x4, or 4WD) cannot be driven on dry pavement because you will ruin your drive shaft. Because when you are turning the wheel on the outside of the turn has to turn more than the inside, and ordinary 4WD do not have a slip mechanism between the axles. All wheel drive has this feature where there is slip between the axles and thus you do not ruin your drive shaft.
4x4 will always have worse gas mileage.

4x4 just means that the suv has 4 wheels and is capable of driving with all 4 wheels and the 4x2 means that it drives only with 2 wheels

It means that a 4x4 SUV has all four wheels connected to the engine. 4x2 SUV has only two wheels connected to the engine the other are free and are dependent upon the movement of other two wheels

4x4 is also called AWD (all wheel drive) and simply means that all four wheels have a drive axle.
4x2 means you have 4 wheels and only 2 of them have a drive axle.
