Is it more dangerous to tan in a tanning bed? If so, why? Thanks.

So let me get this straight. From what I read, the only good way to get Vitamin D for your body is from the sun. Yet sun also gives you skin cancer. Alot of people are outside all day and have nice tans as well. Personally, I don't get a chance to get in the sun for extended periods of time to even get a tan, so I don't think it would hurt to go in a tanning bed 2 or 3 times to get a base tan? Seriously, what are the chances of getting skin cancer in a tanning bed going 5 times at most with already very light skin?

Everything in moderation is fine, the problem with the tanning beds is, they are addictive! I used to work in a salon that had a tanning bed, and I remember reading about them so I would know how long to put "new people" in the beds. They said that 10 minutes is equal to 2 hours. If you are really white you will need to start out at just several minutes at a time! It's almost less of a hassle and better for your skin to get a tanning moisturizer at the store, they're so much milder. The tanning beds really are harmful, as they tan from the inside out.

The UV rays are much more concentrated, so in one way yes. But regular light has even worse types. One of the dangerous things about the tanning bed is that you are usually wearing an excellerant and not an SPF. Either way, it can cause skin cancer.

It is the same as a natural tan. It may be more dangerous as you can get burned faster. Please don't forget Melanoma is on the rise and it is due to tanning beds.

I think it's safer as the UV levels are controlled. Regardless of how you're doing it, tanning is not good for you. Do you enjoy paying to make yourself look older faster?

They are both equally bad. If you are concerned about getting enough vitamin D, you might consider taking a D3 supplement in the winter months.
