1.Some occupations require more qualifications and therefore by default greater intelligence. For example Tax Accountant versus Office Cleaner.
2.Some jobs are very specialised requiring a skill that very few possess, and are in an area well supported that can financially afford to pay greater money. For example NFL quarterback.

Hi there,
Let’s say I work at a supermarket or fast food place. I don't really need much experience or a huge education to do that.
On the other hand I might have studied for five years or so to become a lawyer or doctor. I would be paid much more for I'm giving you a specific service and have great knowledge in it.
If I was to go and study some more to become a Neurologist I would be paid more than my other doctor friends because I specialize in that field and know much more than them about it.
So I would say one reason would have to your qualification and another would have to responsibility. If you are an employee at Company X you'd be paid accordingly but if you are the MD for a certain department, in that company, you'd be paid much more for you are to oversee all the employees beneath you and take responsibility for your departments performance.

A combination of the difficulty of the job and the demand. One cannot be a surgeon without extensive training and education and few people are able to do it so it pays well.

Because you have to have better qualifications for some, like going to school for a long time (doctor, vet, ect) and some are dangerous.
