Plants suffer quite badly from cigarette smoke. Especially tomato plants. It seems to be even more unhealthy for the plant than it is for us.

Yes, plants love the smoke. I have found that all kinds of plants are better in a polluted environment, also use reclaimed water and you will be happy with the results. My daughter did an experiment in JR High a few years back where she put 3 mum plants under different treatments, #1 she followed the garden store advice, # 2 she put in a smokers lounge and had it watered with reclaimed water, and #3 she subjected to her own room and minimal effort. # 3 died, # 2 was beautiful and #1 changed very little - experiment was over a 6 week time frame. I also discovered that my cut flowers do better with soapy water than aspirin, don't know why but they last a whole week longer.

Plants will help to clean the carbon monoxide from the air, but the other chemicals in smoke are not good for the plants. Nicotine is a pesticide, and while it may help keep bugs off your plants, it will clog the pores on the plant that it needs to soak up sunshine.

While living in a military dorm in Germany, I had a friend who would extinguish his cigarettes in the soil of a potted plant that I kept on my desk. He always told me that the nitrogen was good for the plant, but I've never heard of anything like that before.
One day I came home from work early and the room smelled like something was burning. There was a steady stream of smoke coming out of the plant pot and rising to the ceiling. Apparently, the peat moss had been smoldering for hours and probably would have burst into flames had I not come back and poured a pitcher of lemonade into it.

Actually plants need oxygen, just like animals in order to live. Their advantage is they can make oxygen during the day from photosynthesis but at night they breath in oxygen, just like us. And just like us, carbon monoxide will kill the plant. If you want to speed up the process to see what will happen, put you plant in a big dry cleaning bag and hook it up to your car's exhaust for 1 minute to fill the bag with CO. Go back in a few days and see what happened to your plant.

carbon monoxide is completley different than carbon dioxide. it would probably be harmful to the plant.

It's not good for humans so I doubt it will be good for the plant.
