It affects the lower rear part of a horss leg just above the hoof on the back side can affect front or rear legs.
It is an infection.
You need to soak the feet and remove all the scabs and treat it with an antibiotic ointment and then wrap the feet for a few days.
Appling a greasy ointment over the top of the area to keep the area clean and not get water into it.
Once things dry up it goes away with some treatment.

ugh i hate mud fever... it NEVER GOES AWAY. I bought a horse with it.
i mean technically you an get it to go away., i am despritly trying.
IT is also commenly known as rainrot. It's a fungal disease on the horses legs. It causes scabbing, and the horse to possibly lose some hair on the legs where it is. It is bad to get it wet, or muddy. Horses get it when they are not properly brushed, and mud or dirt is left coated on it's legs. You use specific medications applied directly to the legs to make it go away, and you have to keep the infected legs as clean as possible

In horses "mud fever" rainrot, greasy heel, whatever a horse person calls it, is just infection under the skin, alot of times it affects the legs, alot of times the hind, you will see scabs and sores & under the hair you'll see pus or infection, horses get it alot when they are in rain and mud and infection starts under the matted or muddied hair & it simply spreads.. I've always called it rainrot> It's a pain for your horse to get because its sometimes tough to treat & alot of times the hair will fall off in clumps. there is alot of good meds out there to treat it though. One is actually called Mud X Spray..Good luck
