usa secret service needs to grow up and face reality instead of behaving in such a gung ho way. I thought that the US constitution allowed freedom of speech so the girl was within her rights to proclaim what she did about the President. I'm sure she reflected the views and opinions of many, but then again when a country like the US allows itself to be ruled by a dictator who stole the elections through fraud, i.e. a bloodless coup detat then they only have themselves to blame if paranoia leads to a 14 yr old girl being terrorised. No doubt my opinion will be considered subversive so soon I'll recieve a visit from the men in Black. Tea or coffee?

Did any of you even bother to READ the article before posting?

According to the article: "She also posted the words "Kill Bush" and ran a cartoon of a knife stabbing the hand of the president."

Which is illegal. Period. It is a crime to threaten the life of the President, even if you are not serious, as Lt. Daniel Dluzneski of the Secret Service noted when dealing with a similar case:

"Every person who makes a threat against the president, vice president or their families is interviewed and investigated. It doesn't matter who they are or how old they are. Whoever the individual is, we are mandated by law to speak to them and investigate."

So she wasn't taken away because she called Bush an idiot (if that were happening, half the users on this site would be in Gitmo). She was taken away for posting a threat to the life of the President, and the Secret Service takes EVERY threat like that VERY seriously.

re: totalitarian society or Nanny State it's not fiction it's fact

it's amazing how they were able to catch a 14 year old girl so fast for calling GWB an idiot.

almost as amazing how the 9/11 plotters slipped through there hands.

it sound like a scene from Anne Frank diary. this will probably arouse more anger towards the secret service. they should make a public apology to that 14 year old and start to improve there public image. unfortunately they are a necessary evil. hopefully one day the world will be a safer place and there will be no need for these infringements of our rights.

As everything today the media go way over the top. You should never really taken on board the things that are said in the papers or on TV or on the Net for that matter. We should be our own people and not follow the rest of the world and their ways of thinking. Yes they went over the top, but if you live in that country and freedom of speech is what they preach then this little girl should have her god given right as an American to say what the hell she wants. I mean most of his own staff don't like him, But they don't get drag out of the white house do they.

so if u tell the truth now u are likely to be questioned by the secret service this is a bit over the top bush is an idiot and everyone knows it. it sounds to me like they are trying to stop people from having there own thoughts hold on isn't there something in the constitutional rights about protecting that exact thing.

Well.............I think that what happened is a bit extreme, although I haven't heard about it. That girl didn't say anything to threatened the President's life, she just said what she thought about him. Freedom of Speech is supposed to allow that sort of thing, so I don't understand why the Secret Service would get involved in such a simple insult. The Democrats have publicly said much worse.

By the way, I'm an American.

If true, that is dreadful, and I am sure it will soon happen here (UK) too.

When I was a child my dad used to tell me how great it was that in this country we had freedom of speech, how we could say anything about the government or people in charge and it was ok, so long as we didn't hurt anyone. I am sad to say, that I cannot tell my own children the same thing.

I have put my life on the line to defend your right to free speech. However, I learned in a university law class that not all speech is protected. For example, you cannot yell "Fire!" in a crowded theater. It's a law meant to protect the society of Americans, not just the individual. We will never be the nation our forefathers envisioned, if we don't start thinking about what's best for all of us, not just ME. Protecting the president, regardless of what you think of him, is important to the entire society of America. If you don't like George W. Bush, work on Al Gore's election campaign team, but don't threaten our president. It makes you part of the problem and it's better to be part of the solution.
