Voodoo is a mix of African tribal religions and Christianity. It works like any other religion, really.
As for the magic, I would suggest reading up on the religion first. I don't necessarily believe in magic, but you want to be doing things respectfully and with full understanding of what you are doing. If you just read some Voodoo curse out of a book without knowing what the meaning behind it all is, a) it's really disrespectful to the religion. Imagine someone who knows nothing of Christianity chomping on the Body of Christ thinking it'll give them power b) if the world is a stranger place than we think, you could be doing more harm than good, and c) for the magic to "work", whether mentally or in the real world, you may need to actually, you know, understand what you're doing.

Voodoo is a religion. If you want to learn more about it, start googling.
If, as I suspect, you're trying to learn more about cursing people, I don't recommend it. Whether or not it works doesn't matter - I firmly believe that an intent to do harm is evil. And once you let evil in, you're f***ed. I'm an atheist, so my definition of evil and f***ed may vary from the norm, but bad is bad....
If you're wanting to learn more about the MYTH of how cursing works, you can google that too. For educational purposes.
But in a nutshell, the curses work because the curser tells the cursee that they've been cursed. And the cursee believes in the magic, and so may suffer the negative effects.
It works via superstition. If you told me that you had cursed me, I wouldn't worry. Both because I don't believe in it, and because I don't personally fear you.

I would classify voodoo as a form of magic and no it does not work. There has been a very large monetary reward for many years for anyone that can do a real magic trick. No one has claimed it.
