What should the nation do?
*Fight to the bitter end? Risk complete annexation and destruction for the pursuit of a noble dream of liberty?
*Or sue for peace instead, and keep the few lands we have left, maybe to resume the fight again another day, when the odds are better?

Sounds like you have a good story idea going there. Both of your ideas don't leave room for the white horse to come through and save the day - . Think outside the box for the answer.
