it is the best in the world! it feels like your flying!
if you know the basics of riding, and/or you have a good seat anyways, then you should get it right off,
i love to jump. it feels kinda scary when you are going towards it, but after you jump it, you will prolly never want to stop, if u are anything like me!
i have jumped like 4'3" and it was AWSOME!
i luv my horse! you should get a trainer for jumping if you want to learn how to seriously jump, but if you want to for fun, then just try jumping your horse (or whatever horse you r riding) over a tiny log or something, but u have to stand out of the stirrups and lean slightly forward, and mabye b4 jumping you should try to trot over some poles, so you get the feel of going over something.

GOOOOOOODDDDD LUCK!!!

good luck!

At first it scared the pants off of me. I don't know why. My trainer started me off on like mini jumps, nothing over 3 feet. I was a kid when I started. I wasn't really all that excited about it.

Then as I started to compete, it became addictive. I wanted to jump everything, wanted the best horse and wanted to win.

As I got older, I learned to just love it as FUN! Jumping through the air on horse back is exciting! Steeple chases are crazy fun. I only did those for fun, not competition.

I think you will have to try it for yourself to decide. Just no matter what you feel at first, give yourself a chance to build confidence and skill. Do a lot of riding and training, long before you take the first jump.

I know you will do great!

Good Luck and Take Care

It can be scary, and a lot of fun too. I like to jump, but only with my mare. There's a lot of details to keep in mind when approaching a fence. I've dropped contact with the horse before the jump, and he dumped me on it. My mare prefers me not to do much other than stay on, rate her occasionally, and which fence is next, so I enjoy riding her. She's gotten me out of a few tight spots and has never refused. I used to go over 5 foot when I was taking lessons, now that I just ride at home I keep the fences low, about 3 foot, max.

If you want to start jumping, get a trainer and work with them. Its the best way to do it.

Of course it's fun! It's great! It is not hard as long as you know how to jump, and as long as you're riding a reliable horse that knows what jumping is all about. In mid-flight you have to give him a little slack in the rein, otherwise you could injure his mouth, even break his jaw. Make sure you've read up on it. Also, do not be afraid, if you're not completely confident in yourself and your horse, he will feel that you're scared. But don't worry about that, what you want do to is start with small crossrails, that only feel like a little bump in the road at first, and gradually build up to when you are comfortable.
To me jumping is fun, thrilling, and I think it's the best part of riding!
Hope this helps, feel free to ask me anything else

I can jump 2 ft. 7 right now. It is a lot of fun and not scary...It really livens up ring work and changes things up...... once you horse gets the idea of jumping (not refusing) you can go over weird things as long as they are in your ability. ex a hay bale.....a bunch of cones lined up....a panel tilted so that it is more wide than tall......its really fun and it keeps your horse thinking and awake :)
Start out with ground poles. make sure your horse is comfy with going over these any way you tell her......(at an angle....2 in a row....)
very gradually , make the poles cavaletties.......
at first you might have to prop up some poles beside the cavalettie to encourage you horse to go over it. look straight a head (it really helps).....grab mane so you don't catch your horse's mouth....and make her go over it....it is definitely small enough for her to go over it at a stand still .... (6 in.)
By only raising the bar a couple of inches at a time you and your horse won't know the difference.....don't jump too high too soon!
;)
get a couple of lessons on jumping...so you can learn 2 point...when to get into 2 point.....its great and many horses love it!

I've only done smallish jumps, but it is very fun. I don't think it would be hard to learn if you started on small jumps and then increased the height, so that you gradually learned how to balance for the higher jumps. That's what I would do if I were learning. I so wish that I had a horse, but I don't have one right now.

My wife is the horse person. Her family had horses for many generations, and her grandparents had a riding school. From what these people tell me, jumping is *extremely* dangerous and should only be done by the most experienced and skillful riders. Remember Christopher Reed the crippled actor who fell while jumping a horse. You could not get me to try jumping a horse, no way.

I love to jump. My gelding and I like to ride through the woods and jump over natural obstacles like creeks, downed trees, etc. It keeps it fresh versus jumping a course and going around in circles. My gelding and I will jump things under 3 feet. I don't want to fall any farther should I lose my seat!!!

Just make sure that you receive training BEFORE you attempt jumping anything otherwise you may hurt yourself or your horse. Make sure you ALWAYS wear protective headgear!!

Happy jumping!

Jumping is VERY fun!!! I can be hard, but once you know how it is more easy! I can jump 2'6'' and moving up. The only time it is scary for me is when my horse refuses the jump, and when I fall off!

Depends on the horse. It's easy to do once you have the right training and a good horse that doesn't balk at heights and throws you off. Jumping is fun, falling off...well, that's another story.
