It seems whalers think that they can kill a specific number of whales each year, no more, and their scientists tell them this is a sustainable number so the whale will not go extinct. Whalers believe whaling is good for the economy and provides jobs and food for an impoverished nation. Although measures are being taken to prevent a whale species extinction, which all nations unilaterally agree is bad, there seems to be a lack of sympathy in the amount of physical pain the whale must experience when being killed and a total overlooking of whale intelligence in terms of it being an animal that is basically too intelligent for people to mindlessly kill.
There's also a moratorium, or an international law or ban on whale hunting that some countries refused to sign or agree to.

You are quite right, I am nearly fifty and I expect to see the demise of several large species like whales in my lifetime. Over hunting has seen the European Beaver, the Great Bustard, Wolves, Bears and many other animals become extinct in the UK. We did it all in times historical when there was some excuse for ignorance. Today nations like the Japanese and Norwegians and a few others have no real excuse for such behaviour, their reasons are cultural and financial.
It is strange though how we make such a fuss over large animals such as whales when we quite happily carry on exploiting and buying Cod which are also under extreme pressure due to over huntng without calling ourselves barbarians etc Cuddly creatures rule ok? The real tragedy of the North Sea is the over fishing of a tiny fish called the sandeel just for use as fertiliser, this creature is the basis for a large number of food chains in this aquatic environment and yet do we have the protests about its demise. Before we scream at others we should also be looking at what our own exploitations are doing.

Whales have not been hunted commercially for 20 years, until now. Japan and Norway have continued to hunt for 'scientific' purposes. After a lot of very dubious political activity within the Internation Whaling Commission, Iceland have started whaling commercially again. They don't need to but they see it as their traditional right.

Actually John whales have fought back Moby Dick was based off a true story of a whale that attacked a whaling ship called the Essex.
Japan and Russia still hunt whales. It's up to the people of those countries to stop purchasing whale meat when they do there'll be no reason to go whaling anymore.

It is horribly sad. These people feel that it is their God given right to do such acts because of ethnicity or heritage.
