"A Place for Everything and Everything in its Place" - First start by tossing out what is no longer needed and donate any usable items you no longer use. Next organize the room make sure all the furnishings fit and everything in the room belongs there, for example don't store kitchen items in the family room they will either never be used or wind up sitting in the kitchen on the counter while you try to remember where it goes. Next vacuum/sweep and put in the order you would like to keep it. Finally always put things back where you found them and dust vacuum/sweep at least 1x a week at least this will keep most any room looking guest ready.
The biggest tip is to get rid of anything you don't want, need or use - you will be amazed at how much room you suddenly have and how much cleaner your home looks.

With any room, there are a few things that you can do that are niether time consuming nor are they expensive. The first thing that you will want to do is dry dust surfaces daily. Take an old sock and wipe it across commonly seen surfaces: tabletops, entertainment stands, tvs, dvd players, etc. Get a small basket to keep at your front door to "throw" stuff into: your keys, mail, and cell phone. Get one of those floor sweepers to run over carpeted and non-carpeted areas. Make your bed and put your pillows on your couches before you leave the house. All of this should take about five minutes daily, and when it's time to really clean, there is less to clean.
Good luck! :) Hope this helps a little!

Its very simple. First, you MUST de-clutter your space. Pitch or donate anything you don't use or haven't used in 1 year. Then eliminate any unnecessary furnishings.
Everyday, put dirty clothes in the hamper. Put clean clothes in the closet or dresser. It only takes seconds to put things in their place.
Keep your bed made too. It is amazing what a difference a made bed makes!
Make a weekly chore list for yourself. One day a week, dust and vacuum. On another, tidy drawers and take out laundry or trash. If you break it down into different days, it is not so overwhelming to keep up with.

By not making a mess at all? Seriously :) It helps, though. Keeping your room simple is also a good way, too. Don't put out too much decoration stuff and grouping things together helps. It make it looks like the room is somewhat organized.
