You've had plenty of answers, some sensible and others, well...!
For my 2 points I think that many surnames came into use according to ones occupation. That's why there are so many Smiths. Thus also Smithson would be the son of a smith. I'm sure you can think of many more. A possibility for Mendy would be the local mender of whatever. In really olden days there would be only a few such people in a village, so there wouldn't be much confusion, but then the Christian name would identify the person.

Not sure about a surename, but your surname is the same as your last name-- or should I say laste name?

So if your First name is "Tom" and your Last name is "Cruz"
then then your surname would be Cruz. And yes, I'm having fun with the spelling ;)

Unless "Mendy" is short for "Madonna" in which case you only have one name, and got rich that way (wink!).

Is it? Generally the surname is your family name. Think "sire name" which would come from your dad. Is your last name Mendy? If so, I've got to ask. Were your parents cruel enough for Mindy Mendy?

Do you mean the origin of your surname? Mendy is a male Jewish name or nickname. It usually is a shortened form of 'Mendel' or 'Menachem'. It was popularized in American culture by the Seinfeld series when Seinfeld would visit a New York City restaurant called 'Mendy's'.
