Mainly from bullying but could be they don't get on with their teacher that well, even be that their mates bunk off so they do it to be one of the crowd so to speak. Obvious disadvantage is their schoolwork will suffer and they will struggle in later life to get a decent job.

I played truant all the time, i had a good family home and parents, i was one of the guys at school not bullied in any way, just did'nt like conforming to the crap issued at school, teach me something that was help full i may have stopped? I think i was the type of person who rebelled at anything that was forced on me, i'm much the same today, i do what i got to and no more, conformist (attitudes way beyond the call of duty in the workplace) drive me nutz to this day!!!
Believe it or not i'm told i'm like able? Just an old rebel at heart i guess.

I can't quote research evidence for this, it comes largely from experience but...
Many children seem to truant because they don't feel like they're achieving anything in school and/or they struggle with the work (bullying also a major factor). They might enjoy more hands on things such as resistant materials (which could lead to a job anyway) but the focus is so much on academic subjects they 'don't see the point' and feel rejected or like they don't belong in the school system.

In the short term they often end up in a crowd of similar minded children which may well turn to 'small' acts of crime and anti social behaviour perhaps unconsciously to show their 'rebellion against the system' or to ensure they're further excluded from mainstream society or just to brake up the day.

Long term (assumed nothing is done), they get no qualifications, ergo few job prospects. They're unlikely to be taken on as apprentices in anything as they can't prove their commitment or ability to stick with something. They may turn to 'larger' acts of crime to earn a bit of money or just brake the tedium.

1: Being bullied this can cause sleepless nights, not eating, self hard such as scratching themselves, being quiet, depression, Low self esteem, no confidence, no self worth and the worst suicide.
2: Peer pressure this can cause a good child to get in to trouble as he is just following the pack.Fear of being bullied if they do not do as peers say.
3:Attention seeking makes them look big in front of their peers and also someone to be respected sad but true for some. problems caused encourage others to follow suit, get expelled.
4:Depression some children just can not cope so problems casued as no 1.

Other effects of being truant lack of education, disfunction child who roams the street causing trouble, shoplifiting. complete heart ache to parents and family. May get expelled from school and not able to find another school so no education can be no future prospects on leaving.
I will add that above may or may not happen depending on child also the law in england parents face prison if child does not go to school.

I think a lot of kids truant as they are getting bullied, or they are trying to act "cool!" The problems it can cause is either they miss out on a load of schoolwork, or they don't get to do their exams, or they get poor grades, because they missed out on so much of the schoolwork.

My daughter was truant because she was depressed and unmotivated. I couldn't get her out of bed for school. But later in the day she would get up and go out with friends.
Her truancy was cured when the school called in the authorities and told her they could take away her driver's license if she didn't meet attendance requiremens.

they are normally influenced by someone else, or for the thrill of it,

my daughter played truant once she went to her friends house because her friends mother was at work. unfortunately for her, the friends mother was sent home early sick so they got caught red handed.

Children will get away with what you allow them to get away with.

It's human nature.

Discipline them, now.
