My husband owns a Colt pistol, (Bisley Model) 38 W.C.F. on left side of barrell, can you help me find any info

Question

This pistol has a patent of Sept.19. 1871, with the dates July2.72.Jan.19.76 under the shell cylendar. We were give this pistol about 35 years ago by a friend who told us this belonged to her Grandfather. She was born in about 1922. Can you help me find any information on this pistol? I have the serial number also.
