When a new virus is written, it is sent out, either by email, or through a download on a website in most cases. A virus is a program, or it is embedded in a program (there are a few exceptions to this, such as macro viruses, but generally the rule holds). It cannot travel in a photo, or in an MP3 file, though a virus can be disguised to appear as one of those. You have to check the file extension to be sure - viruses can travel in .exe, .bat, or .com files. Usually they are in .exe files. For Mac or Linux, those extensions are different.

Of course you can. You can always get viruses from anything you download. But I think it's not that a big deal with mp3. It's just music. Make shure, that you're downloading mp3's when you click on a link, because sometimes the links point to different file types.

You can get a virus from downloading any file, no matter what extension it has. Anybody can change the extension of a executable file that could be malicious to something like .mp3 or .png or any other popular file type. Just because it says it's a certain extension doesn't mean that it's that type of file. To prove it, right click on any file and click rename, and type in whatever you want to call it, and put a different extension on it than previously before. See? Hope this helps!

Yes, the mp3 file could be the virus itself disguised to look like an mp3 file. When you go to open the file, the virus attacks.

You can obtain a virus from just about any foreign file, doc, attachment in an email, etc. that you permit to access your PC. Especially if you do not equip your PC with the basic security necessities (i.e. Norton/Mcafee, etc. antivirus protection, Spyware/Adaware removal tools, Windows firewall or physical firewall, Browser security, updated security patches to your OS, and so on and so on) Best suggestions that I could give you are:
-get antivirus software
-make sure your OS stays up to date
-turn your computer off/close your network connections when not in use
-don't visit untrustworthy websites
-don't download something if you aren't sure what it is
-don't open strange emails

You can get a virus from download ANYTHING. Don't assume that just because someone says it's an mp3, or that it's labeled as an mp3, that it doens't contain a virus, or isn't a virus itself.

Yes.....this is what happens with p2p sites. You are willingly allowing a stranger to send files to your computer. How do you know whether you can trust them or not?
This is the risk anyone takes just for free music/movies. Not worth the hassle of having a screwed up computer.
