I am 24 weeks pregnant, and I am a teacher. My school has been completely unsupportive of me being pregnant. I have a meeting off campus tommorow around 2:30 to meet with somebody who may be able to help me out financially when I go on maternity leave. It is a very important meeting, and this was the only time they could take me. I don't want my school to know my financial business, so what I can say to them about why I need to leave early tommorow??

I dread telling them because I always get an attitude from them when I have to leave early, etc.

Thanks

If you have personal days, take the afternoon off. If not, tell them you have a pregnancy related appointment which you were unable to schedule for later. If they ask for details, if you work in a public school in the US, you can legally say that it's confidential. If you work in a private school, you are faced with the choice of telling the truth or lying, which is a choice no one can make for you.

It's easier to negotiate these things if you have more advance notice. If you can, avoid making last minute appointments. If the administration isn't supporting you, you need as much room to make arrangements as possible.

Do you get any personal leave? Technically it's none of their business what you do with your time on personal leave. If that won't work, considering the conditions it sounds like you're in, I would fake sick. It's not a great thing to do, but if you need to leave and won't be able to otherwise, do it. I think you should also talk to either Central Office or your school board about the school not treating you right for being pregnant. That's totally not allowed, and something should be done about it.

I first i would tell you to consider telling the truth, however, seeing the conditions that you are in at work...I would tell them that there are some financial matters that you need to square away, and it is very important and you can only do it tomorrow. Call in sick? family emergency?

Another thing, your a teacher and the school where your working is unsupportive of your pregnancy?... That's horrible, it does not look like a good work environment to be in. Just think when you do have your baby and you need to leave work early for various reasons, are you going to be scared to tell them?.. I would have your baby and consider being transferred to another school. That's discrimination!

tell them that you need to take some time to take care of personal business. If they ask you what business, tell them that you have already told them that it is personal. If you knew about this meeting 2-3 days ago, you should have told them then so that they could make arrangements. I am sure someone is going to have an attitude about the short notice you are giving. They are going to have to find someone to take your class on very short notice which is a lot of work for the administrative personnel.

Take a personal day. That's what they are for. I'm not sure I'd take a sick day, because I have known administrators who contact a doctor's office to see if you were seen. With the new HIPA (sic) law, I don't think they can do that, but you never know. Besides, you will need your sick days when you take your leave.

you are right they don't need to know your business.I would tell them that you have to leave to go to Dr. appt or pick a friend up at an airport or your dog has to go to the vet or you are just sick and need the time off. If they can not respect you may be its time to find a new school to teach at. congrats on the new baby

If you have sick leave or vacation leave benefits, use them. That way it is a personal day and no one can request any information. If you don't, be straight with whomever it is that you need to get permission from. There are laws surrounding pregnant employees. Consider researching them and arming yourself with information. You are a teacher-knowledge is power.

Either call in sick and take the whole day. Or leave early and just tell them it is for personal reasons.

Well I'm sorry that you are having a hard time with your school, but you have two options.

1) Call in sick tomorrow, and miss the whole day.

2) Take a personal day if possible.

Good Luck.

Do you have any personal days/vacation days/sick days? If you do, you are under no obligation to tell them the reason you're taking the day off, just tell them you are taking one of your personal days. If they push for a reason, just tell them you would rather not talk about it (there's a reason it's called a PERSONAL day).

If you don't have any that you can use, tell them you need to take the day off and just take it off... chances are you won't be fired, you might just have to take a hit on your pay for the day you miss.
