Actually they don't help us breathe, we are on our own there.
What they do is take in carbon dioxide, CO², then via photo synthesis they extract the carbon as their building material and release the freed oxygen into the air.
You could say that they produce oxygen as a by-product of obtaining the carbon they need to create the plant materials, fibers and wood.

it's true there are other places oxygen comes from but trees especially large trees use carbon dioxide and monixide as we use oxygen. trees filter these toxins from the air and then release oxygen in the form of o2 as well as o3. replacing much needed O-Zone and cleaning the air we need. which those funky little planktons will not do. So many trees are still being cut because so many people still just don't care. the fact that people have even started planting trees after cutting is a "nice" idea but only part of what needs to be done. Will "we" run out of air if we destroy all the trees maybe not. but the effect will be disastrous on the earth from lack of habitat for millions of other plants and creatures some of which we still don't even know exist. It all goes back to the all mighty dollar everyone wants it and if cutting trees is how you get yours... you ain't about to stop doing it.

Trees take in carbon-dioxide (which is what we exhale) to help with photosynthesis. The by-product of this process is oxygen which is then re-released into the air and we breath it for the making of our energy. Then we exhale carbon-dioxide and the whole process starts over again.
