Well, people may agree on some things, while others agree upon other completely different historical aspects.
To me, just a few such great achievements are: The American Revolution, where America was freed from the overpowering Britain at the time. The freeing of slaves by President Abraham Lincoln was a large step forward in this direction. But, my particular favorite is what America will do for the preservation of freedom.

I wouldn't say freeing the slaves, since they did this later and more reluctantly than other countries (including Britain). But creating a country of such opportunity that millions of people want to live there and have made it the most scientifically advanced and culturally influential country in the world in just 200 years, that's a great achievement.

Oh I think it's rock and roll, or hot dogs, or sky scrapers, or coke, or Hollywood, or john Gresham, or all things we love to hate you for and all the things which we have assimilated into our culture with open arms and then blamed you for. You have a kind of freedom, not perfect but fiercely protected, the vast majority of you would share that with the world but are confused by the lack of enthusiasm demonstrated by others. God bless America

The moon landings. Probably the greatest achievment of any single nation in human history. It was the mark of an industrious, confident and capable nation that could aspire to even greater things.
How bitter, then, is the disappointment that they have gone so far downhill from there.

i would say their are many, but the one single one for me would be the moon landing, after that it would be saving Europe from a Nazi invasion and Communist influence. those two showed that they are the only country in the world that could lead us and even today they are the one single force between freedom and tyranny. i have no doubt that without USA their would be a lot of war in or world. we know for sure that their are countries like North Korea and Iran who want a power and would do anything to get it, even destroy the very base of our civilization. although lately i have come to doubt that from what i see on TV in the war in Iraq. but what the hell, every country has its down times, like humans.

The mass immigration policy of the 19th Century, the USA would not be the country it is today had that not happened.
