Things were built to last in the victorian era - now they say they were "over-engineered and wasted materials. they use the minimum of materials now to build a hospital and it's ready for demolition in 10 years time. They build the bloody things round and oval with massive entrance halls that take old people an hour to walk across on their zimmer frames. the respiratory unit for those with breathing problems is always the other end of a long corridor. Politicians in the Victorian era had better ideas too - the window tax hit the people with big houses that could afford it. the candle tax was good too! Make Light bubs £1 a watt and everyone would use low energy light bulbs and not waste energy!

What??!?
England was one of the first countries to have a comprehensive sewerage system. Our sewers are Victorian, that's true, but they are being maintained and updated, it's just very expensive to do so, and takes a long time.
Here's a link to some info. about Joseph Bazalgette, who designed London's sewers.

However I'm not entirely sure what you mean about England's 'mentality' being stuck in the Victorian era, would you please add some more information as to what exactly you mean?

Why not old chap, eh? Come over to the gentleman's club later and we'll discuss the matter over a pipeful of shag and a snifter of brandy.

What on earth are you drivelling on about?
Brittan has one of the best sewerage systems in Europe.
And what is wrong with keeping our heritage.
Its some thing to be proud of, all of our trials and tribulations is what make us what we are.
BRITISH and proud of it.

I would rather belong to a nation with a 'stiff upper lip 'culture than go down down the route of the yankee 'hip hop' gun carrying lunatics that are breeding like flies thanks to the 'americanisation' of our culture.
