1. digging
2. pick up small objects
3. protect tips of fingers
4. scratching
5. enhances sensation of the finger by acting as a counterforce

1-3 are for finger nails, 4-6 are for construction nails, you didn't say which type of nails.
1. To paint
2. To bite
3. To scratch
4. To hammer things in place
5. To poke holes in tires
6. To get rusty, then step on and have to get a tetnes shot

Do you mean the diy sort of the sort you find on the end of your toes and fingers? Always worth sorting that out before you start your biology homework.
The nails protect the ends of thefingers - to stop them from fraying. They are also there to be painted in the latest blingin fashions and to show off to your mates. They can also be chewed on anxiously as you wait to hear whether that boy in the other class fancies you :)

1, to scratch a really itchy foot/back/arm
2, to be able to get those hard to reach boggies up you nose
3, to use as a temporary tooth pick just after eating fruit gums
4, to paint and make look nice
5, to be able to peal a sticker off when you put it in the wrong place
6, to make cool tapping noises when bored
