Mostly I give people some space.
I think I would judge whether it was good idea, then I would say hi. What I liked , how much and why.
I would like to talk with James Burke sometime. His books and TV shows were there for me at a time when I needed them. He has a VERY interesting mind. I would like to pick it for an afternoon sometime.

I've seen lots of famous people (I live in Southern California) but I've never approached them. While their faces might be familiar, famous people are basically strangers and I'm not outgoing enough to approach a stranger unless I had something specific in mind to say. I'd be too embarrassed.

I actually had this happen to me, in 1984...
While working at the ring-toss game booth, yes I traveled with a fair, Kin Shiner walked up and bought a few hoops. I gave him three for his two bucks and he threw with winning. After he walked away my co-worker told me who he was. My grandmother loves General Hospital, so I saw him again and asked for an autograph. He had a fit, started using not so nice language, because he was there to relax and have fun not be fawned over. HE WAS A JERK!!!

I have said, "Hi, loved your show." It was a mistake, the actor was polite, but became obviously uncomfortable.
I think the best option is to treat them like any stranger with whom you might strike up a conversation. They are just people that happen to work in a very public job.

I saw Joe Perry from Aerosmith before sitting at a local bar,,I went up to him & said something like,,strange seeing you here & shook his hand & went about my bussiness.
Iv also talked with Steppenwolf once after a concert & Reo Speedwagon,,the guitarist said,,Keep Pushing On,,after I told him I was a guitar player.
