To season a cast iron cooking utensil, you clean it with soap & water, then dry with paper or a towel. Then using a wad of paper towel, apply a generous coating of lard or vegetable shortening over the metal, and bake it for 350 F for about 1 hr.

After each time cooking with it, just wipe again with a dry paper towel (after the utensil has cooled down.) Don't wash with soap and water, else it will rust.

Keep the utensil oiled so it won't rust. If you ever need to clean off rust, just go back to step one.

I would do the same with welded steel.

It depends on what kind of steel it is. If you used mild steel, then just scrub it real good then coat it with vegitable oil, I believe peanut oil works best, and heat it to around 350-375deg for about and hour. This process will season the metal, then after eache use just scrub it and coat it with a light coat of vegitable oil. Just like cast iron it will get better with age.

Is it steel or cast iron also hopefully you used food safe solder (not leaded). If it's steel or cast iron coat it with a thin layer of Peanut oil and cook it at 350 for 2 hours to seal it, then wash thoroughly and repeat once more, your plate is now ready for use. Remember to recoat and heat dry after each use.
