Could be a sticking gas valve, may not even have a thermocouple.
It would have helped if you had given the make and model of boiler, there are only about 9600 models to choose from.
My Vaillant is now 18 years old and works perfectly, it's had a heat exchanger, flue fan motor and a microswitch. I wouldn't have anything other than a combi.
KAREN, I couldn't reply to your mail, as you have it blocked!!

OK Karen, it does sound like the thermocouple isn't working. This controls the pilot light & opens & closes the gas valve when it's hot & cold. It is like a thin copper tube which has a nut on one end & small bulbous piece of metal on the other. Try visiting a website on combi boilers or parts. It's a common fault that's easily rectified.

It you cant get the pilot light to light then it'll be the thermacouple. I have a Midas B Combi boiler and in all honesty it makes em want to smash it!!! ive replaced the thermacouple once very year for the 5 years. they cost £2.78 from b and q

Speak to a plumber but I had a similar problem and it turned out I needed a new ignition switch. Has it also been serviced lately?

Could be the gas valve solenoid or a dodgey circuit board.
