So long as your occupant load was limited to something less than 300 and your total sqaure footage did not exceed 12,000 square feet, I would say no, based on the 2006 ICC Building Code.

If you exceed 300 on the occupants or 12,000 Square feet, not only may a sprinkler system be required, but so may a fire alarm system.

However, as some have pointed out, codes can change as you move from area to area. Since I have no idea where you are at, it's hard to be 100%.

Code or not, it's in ones best interest to install an automatic fire prevention system. The current UV/IR systems can be adjusted/modified to trip at various levels. I would start by checking your local and state codes. Then I would find as much information as possible from a reputable supplier such as ANSUL. NFPA is another good source of information.

Ask your insurance company too, as they may require more than code.

Rate of Heat-rise detectors would seem appropriate as they wouldn't be confused by smoke

Contact your local fire department (they don't have to know who you are) and they can give you the skinny.
