There is very strong equality legislation in Ireland protecting the rights of minorities, so it's not racist in that sense. Racist literature and speeches are very uncommon and probably are illegal. I have only rarely come across real racists, but they definitely exist here just like any other country. Examples of racial hatred are usually condemned by most people. The Irish have shown themselves, in general, to be relatively tolerant of people from other countries.

Because Ireland has traditionally been a country of emigration, we are not as used as other countries to large numbers of immigrants now coming into our country. To date this hasn't been much of a problem for most Irish people, but if there were to be an economic crisis in the country, it might become a bigger issue.

There is one exception, and that is the strong level of discrimination against our own indigenous travelling community. Relations between travellers and settled people are very bad, and have been so for many years. Travellers are viewed with deep suspicion by the mainstream Irish community.

I have never read anything to indicate that the Irish are racist. From what I have read, the "Black Irish" that came to the United States hundreds of years ago, came for the possibility of making more money, not because of racial oppression. I am absolutely sure, that there are racists in Ireland, but no; I don't think that Ireland is racist.

(Since racism isn't a political system a country cannae be Racist)

Hey! I'm Irish! and I don't think the rumors are as horrible as you think, the older generations are racist I'll admit; especially towards black/ethnic people (you have to realize that it was an island full of whites where NO-ONE wanted to go for decades, in fact we all left) and there is a minority who don't like immigrants, or foreigners or Asians, black people, Muslims, Jews, etc.. but they also don't like people who work to hard, or not enough etc, etc (they have it in for everyone basically)...but we are way less racist than other European countries, *cough,* Germany, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Belgium... I'm 18 and my generation is the most tolerant, I have friends from all sorts of backgrounds and none of them have ever encountered racism even though many have lived here their entire lives, I don't think you'd have much trouble here, especially if you are young or a student, good luck getting a job though, I'll be emigrating in a few years myself! (if you do decide to come you'll probably be the butt-end of some american jokes though)

Not really, some ppl are though! Religion is no longer a divisive issue, nor gender; there are women in Ireland......after 500yrs of banishment. Race is fine as long as they are willing to work.
There is some hostility towards the amount of Polish there, but that's cos there are so many of them. Dublin city is a different place tho'

Where the hell did that question come from?? Why pick on the Irish to ask that?

I can only answer for myself, but I am not a racist or bigotted Irish person, but I don't represent the whole country.

I think that racism is a personal feeling therefore you can not say that a nation is racist because some of its people are. One more thing if your country was occupied by foreign invaders would you think it wrong to fight for your freedom? If so would you be a terrorist.

Nope.

No country can ever be racist, it is a TOTAL impossibility ~ though I think I once encountered France 'burp' as I flew over it!
But I could have been wrong.

Sash.
