The lady you are looking for was not American, she was a British nurse, and her interest in helping the sick and injured was a result of her presence in the Crimea during the war between Russia and England that took place there. Leadership from first to last was worse then Rumsfeld and company. Thousands lost their lives to bad preparation and idiotic tactics. She came home and founded the Red Cross. Her name was Florence Nightingale.
