I had a cold a couple of weeks ago that went away except for the sinus issues. For the past two days I have had all of the common symptoms of a sinus infection. My head hurts, my face hurts, behind and under my eyes hurts, my teeth hurt, my jaw hurts, I feel extreme pressure in my sinuses, the drainage out of my nose is nonstop and a nasty color...
I am 32 weeks pregnant, and contacted my OB who told me to check with my PCP... I have called 3 times since early this morning and am yet to get a call back. Honestly I don't even want to go to the doctor... is it even necessary for me to take antibiotics for a sinus infection? or will it go away on it's own? Is there anything I can do to get rid of some of this pressure and speed things along? I hate to take any medicine while I am pregnant that is not 100 % necessary..

IF IT IS AN INFECTION YOU DEFINITELY NEED THE ANTIBIOTICS BECAUSE YOU DO NOT WANT THE INFECTION TO SPREAD THROUGHOUT YOUR BODY. THEY WILL NOT AFFECT THE BABY. FOR THE PAIN IN YOUR FACE, BOIL SOME WATER AND PUT SOME TABLE SALT IN IT. THEN, SAT IT ON A TABLE OR SOMETHING AND PUT A TOWEL OVER YOUR HEAD SO THAT YOU CAN INHALE THE SALINE. IT WILL HELP YOUR SINUSES DRAIN. THAT WILL RELIEVE A LOT OF THE PRESSURE. TRY NOT TO BLOW YOUR NOSE TOO MUCH OR SNIFF TOO HARD BECAUSE THAT ONLY MAKES IT WORSE.

Some people can get rid of sinus infections on their own, and some can't. I can not--I can go months w/ one if I don't take antibiotics and for me sometimes several rounds of them.
To get rid of the pressure go to a pharmacy and get a sinus cleansing product. They look like a little genie bottle, but inside you put a saline solution--then you tilt your head and pour the solution into one side of your nose. Repeat on both sides--it really does help clean out the sinuses and relieve pressure!!
Another thought of mine, is that you are really going to want to be rid of this before the baby comes. You don't want to have to deal with this on top a new baby!!

I"ve never taken antibiotics for a sinus infectin and i've had PLEANTY! You'll be miserable for a few days, but try steaming up the bathroom by running a hot shower and sit down and read a magazine. The steam will help drain your sinuses. Also you should invest in a humidifier (it will help your baby once they are here and have a stuffy nose) and sleep with that on in your room. Eat icepops to ease the sore throat that the post nasal drip will cause (its gross sry!) and relax. Try to get rest as in the next few weeks your body is going to need to store its energy for the big day.
Best of luck!

YES they are necessary sounds ike a sinus infection! If not treated the sinus infection can spread to your brain it happened to someone I know. They had to get surgery when it spread to his brain. So you should take medicine. I feel your pain thought sinus pressure is the worse ever and I know you feel so miserable! Take medicine because it is necessary. Actually you can also take a saline solution which is sea salt and water and it gets rid of decongestion. It comes in one of those spray bottles that you have to spray up your nose. Hope you feel better!

well, I did this...Tried over the counter meds right before I had my baby, I ended up in the hospitalgiving birth and sick as a dog..(with a bad cold and infection) I was coughing and pushing...NOT FUN! especially when the baby could be here in a month! Get rid of it the easiest way! So you can be more confortable, in a few weeks you will feel severe pressure down there and you dont want pressure up there too!
GET MEDS! and good luck!

From what you're telling me, it seems like antibiotics are necessary. Your sinus infection (being an infection) won't go away on it's own. It will only get worse. You should get some medicine.

Unfortunately a sinus infection will not go away on it's own. Taking amoxicillin or penicillin during pregnancy is perfectly safe. I had several urinary tract infections during my pregnancy and took both those at one time or another and my daughter is a healthy, happy 3 1/2 year old.

Not in the amount that they are given out. Antibiotics are used for everything therefore viruses are becoming immune to them... which is not good at all. We only have a few different types of antibiotics so if viruses become immune due to over use then we will all be vulnerable to viruses.
My mom gets sinus infections... and never goes to the doctor.

I personally don't think they are necessary, but I'm also not a doctor. It also helped me when I had sinus infections to lay in a dark room with a vaporizer going, and a cool washcloth on my forehead.

No it is not necessary, the body does heal on its own. I would recomend taking a nice relaxing bath to ease your muscle and pains. Drink a lot of fluids to rid of any bacteria in your body and just get loys of rest. You really only need medication if you are dying, everything else are just pain reducers. Dont risk your baby's health.
