This is a classic example of when men want to be in their "CAVE," as this book explains.
Is is in a man's nature to want to tune out from the world, and it's completely normal. Men are problem solvers, and football is a lot about problem solving. They envision themselves in the actual game, and they concentrate on what'd they'd do if they were really in the game. It's a bad idea to initiate cuddling or sex at that point. The more space a man is given when he's in his cave, the more he'll come back to his relationship without fear. If they are nagged or bothered when they are watching football, they'll fall into their cave more often in other ways. This caving is the best caving out there, because it's healthy for their minds.

Yes they are. Mine is watching right now. But make the most of the time for your own space, take a bath, do your nails, wash your hair, have a long talk with a friend on the phone. Enjoy the time you have to yourself. Football is given to men so that their partners can have some time to themselves without running about after their men.

My middle son doesn't move from the TV when football is on, while my eldest goes out of the room and does some drawing or sculpting.

Not a football fan, to much else going on ,don`t have a tv either, no time so, perhaps you should head off in a different direction ?go to a club or somewhere on Football nights?

you need to be asking why are men so boring when the footbal is on if they have a wife and girlfriend at home, dont blame the men if they find it more interesting than there partners company
