The trap in the floor drain most likely dried out. Just pour a gallon of water into the drain and the odor will stop.

RE:
Why is there a floor drain in my laundry room? I have never seen one of these anywhere and there is an odor?
that has been coming from my laundry room for a while now. Could something not be draining right? Does that floor drain have to do with every day use or is it there incase the washing mashine over flowed or what? Thanks in advance.

Your floor drain has a trap to keep the odors out of the house. If the drain trap has not had any water flowing through it, it evaporates and the sewer gasses will come up and make the house smell. It's an easy fix. Just pour water into the drain. Just a few cups will do! The trap will fill up with water which will make block the smells from coming up! Good Luck

I have built many homes, most require drainage in the laundry room per code. The smell is probably coming out of the drain. The P-trap is the part of the drain that holds water to keep the sewer smell out of the home. If the drain hasn't been used for a while the water dries up and in comes the smell. The best remedy is to pour bleach water down it at least weekly or easier yet pour some vegetable oil down it, the oil will not evaporate and will keep the smell out and it is perfectly safe.

BEST Answer: clearly this is a seldom used drain designed for a broken hose or machine overflow. Many drain to the outside, but if it is hooked into the house drainage system, then you can dry out the trap and get gases up causing a smell. Most folks have suggested repeatedly dumping water down there...the water continues to dry out, however, and you need something that will stay, but move in the case of a real need. Use MINERAL OIL down your drain. It will prevent the sewer gases and it will never evaporate or spoil.

The drain in the floor is a great idea and every laundry room should have one.If your washer hose burst then you will not destroy the entire floor in your house. This drain needs water poured down it about every week to fill the trap inside the drain.Make sure you pour water in the drain to keep the smell from coming in the house. You can also mix up something in the water to make it smeel good.Remember to pour water down this drain.Trust me and it will never smell again

The floor drain is most likely in case of washing machine overflow, we had one in our old house. It's possible that is where the smell is coming from. It might be moldy or something. Try taking off the drain cover and pouring a bit of bleach in it, let it sit for a while and then rinse. That will probably get rid of the smell. You should also keep the lid from your washer open when not in use as the moisture in the machine can give off a moldy smell as well.

Sure - just on road trips around the Southwest, I've been from Tucson to Tucumcari, Tehachapi to Tonopah (Little Feat, Linda Ronstadt); stood on the corner in Winslow Arizona (Eagles); and gone through Saint Looey, Joplin, Missouri, and Oklahoma City is mighty pretty. You see Amarillo, Gallup, New Mexico, Flagstaff, Arizona, don't forget Winona, Kingman, Barstow, San Bernandino (Route 66, various). As long as I'm on this roll, Galveston, oh Galveston (Glen Campbell), plus I've seen miles and miles of Texas (Asleep at the Wheel). All the way to Reno (REM); and I've had many opportunities to just roll around Denver all day (Warren Zevon).

the drain is there incase your washer over flows. If you have a bad smell coming from the drain it needs to be cleaned out pry up the top grap some tongs and start cleaning or you could payy some one to do it drain'o could work also.GL
