The Earth's shape is very close to an oblate spheroid, although the precise shape (the geoid) varies from this by up to 100 meters (330 ft). The average diameter of the reference spheroid is approximately 12,742 km (~ 40,000 km / π). The rotation of the Earth causes the equator to bulge out slightly so that the equatorial diameter is 43 km larger than the pole to pole diameter. The largest local deviations in the rocky surface of the Earth are Mount Everest (8,850 m above local sea level) and the Mariana Trench (10,924 m below local sea level). Hence compared to a perfect ellipsoid, the Earth has a tolerance of about one part in about 584, or 0.17%. For comparison, this is less than the 0.22% tolerance allowed in billiard balls. Because of the bulge, the feature farthest from the center of the Earth is actually Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador

No, absolutely no, the earth has a shape like an orange the oranges have smoothy surface and likewise the earth is also not smoother. It have Beautiful nature, it keeps us on the track, many rivers, occan, great HIMALA's, deep caves, are their. the earth is tilted to 23 degree from its axis and it roll over on its North and south polls within 24 hours and round, around the sun with in a YEAR, this process gives beautifull seasons as well as weathers. on the earth many poets have given their thoughts out rightly. William woodworths fabulous poem is very near to it:
THE WORLD IS TOO MUCH WITHUS LET AND SOON
GETTING AND SPENDING WE LAY WEST OUR POWERS
FOR THIS FOR EVERY THING WE ARE OUT OF TUNE.
realy we became too materialistic. we never willing to live with the nature just go to a tree and talk with it like a fillish people ask it, how are you? how do you give us fruits? where could you manage your food, how do you stand still amongs rains, syclones and quakes?, how do you help us a lot? how do you keep clean our envoirnment? HOW DO YOU FILL WHEN A BLODYFUL CUTS YOU? and also what we people will experience in absence of trees.
kindly ask a plant what you fill when we pluck a flower of your own without permission? ask a mountain what you can do for me? ask a river, zeel ar any water resorse that, how i will remove my thrist if you couldnt had water? ask our sky what will happen when the ozonised ambrella will be destroide by pollution.
Our Parampujya Gurudeva shri shri ravishakarji can teach you how do we ca live near the nature.
Further, Shri Harivansh Roy Bachhan hav also given their thoughts:- yeh kaun chitrakar hay.
A perfact ball in all sence never available any where except ball of a bearing. all the other balls kicked or hitted, shooted resulted get loosed.
kindly do not compare the great Earth with a ball it THE EARTH AND THE EARTH ONLY.
Also think that if any body will kick with GOLDEN BOOT or shoot itlike SACHIN and through it like SHOEB and LEE than what will happen? ARAY BHAI HUM NICHE GIR JAYENGE NA.
Pl & Pl let it be The Earth so we could remain on earth.

No, it's not smooth and a ball is completely solid whereas the Earth has oceans

Earth is bulged out at its equator because of its rotation about its own axis and it is flat at its poles. Sir Isaac Newton first proved this, even without measuring the distance!

A simple question like this merits a simple answer like the one given by KSR!
Some of us get carried away, giving long-winded complicated answers!
Consider this example:

A kid returns from his FIRST day at school, and asks his mother in the kitchen "Mommy, Mommy! What is Sex?"
She stops cooking, folds away her apron, and gives him a 30 minute lecture on sex.
The kid finally asks impatiently "But Mommy, How can I write ALL that, in this small space?", pointing to his school Identity Card--
Name........... Age............ Sex.............

Ha ha ha !!
