i purchased a gas generator during the Oct 13 storm that hit buffalo, NY. However, I need to burild a canopy, as recommended by OSHA and Red Cross so I can use it when it rains or snows. I have to have a five foot clearance all around and I will use it on my wooden back deck.

Five foot clearance all around seems rather excessive.

On the other extreme, during winter Generac suggests using the cardboard shipping carton with one side removed as a shelter to help prevent the carburetor from freezing up. There is a picture on page 8 of the manual, available here... http://members.rennlist.org/warren/9885_3.pdf

I've seen others using small plastic storage sheds for their generators, some have built wooden enclosures. My hope was to put together a collapsable shelter which could be easily assembled during rain. However in four years it's never really been an issue and nothing has been built.

Whatever you decide, consider some method of securing our generator against theft. As you can imagine, its value increases considerably during power outages.

A good solution for portable generators 10000KW and less would be simply purchasing a cement mixing tray from Home Depot 36”x24”x8” $12.00
Place it upside down on the generator. Skirt it with some old or new tarp affixed to the cement tray by heavy duty staples or trivets. Cut to the desired height and make sure to cut a nice square around the muffler. Tie the corners of tarp to the legs of the generator frame. Cheap and effective. There is nothing on the market for this purpose with the exception of a cover that is being sold for …Are you ready??? $ 225.00.
You can also use a Poker Table and again cover with tarp cut the length with a large size cut around the muffler and voila.
You may want to put a brick or two on both so the wind won’t take it away.

Yes -- if it has a Diesel engine. But most small generators for home use require gasoline. If you are considering a device for emergency use, the fuel cost doesn't matter much; a gasoline unit will do fine.
