scary movies?

Question

I love scary movies but have never seen one that actually makes me want to hide behind the sofa. I've seen all the usual ones like the exorcist, saw 1+2, the omen, the shining etc. Any ideas would be grateful

some of the Korean and Japanese ones - esp The Grudge, Ghost, and R-Point.

Stephen King's IT - well, it scared me because I don't like clowns!

A Nightmare on Elm Street. It's actually really frightening, even though all the sh*t sequels took away from it. It's about a child murderer (Freddy Krueger) who gets let off on a technicality, so the parents of the dead kids burn him to death, but 10 years later the kids he didn't kill, who are now teenagers, all start having nightmares where he stalks them. It's really scary cos the characters don't know if they're asleep or not a lot of the time, so weird stuff starts happening before they realise they're dreaming. Then they start getting killed in the dreams, but they also die in real life. It's really violent, especially the first girl who dies, she gets disembowelled and dragged all over her bedroom walls and ceiling leaving blood everywhere. And the bit in the bath is so creepy. Also Johnny Depp is in it as the main girl's boyfriend, so if you're a fan of his I'm sure you'll love it. Until he gets killed of course.

Two less well know classics are Suspiria (1977) and Maniac (1980), both are pretty scary. Suspiria is about an American girl going to school in Europe, strange things start happening, and she finds out witches congregate at the school. It's very atmospheric and suspenseful. Maniac is about a serial killer in NYC. It's not a typical serial killer movie though, it's deranged, and sick, and just horrifying. I love it.
