Only way I have ever heard of is a sharp chisel and light tapping with a small hammer. Once you get the mortar off you can power wash it at a car wash and it should be the focal point of your Racing Room.

Why would you want to? The mortar is from
the speedway. You may reduce the value of
brick by cleaning it. If you don't care, you can
chisel off what you can and then try an acid
wash.

Go to the hardware store and ask for a brick ax / brick hammer for removing mortar from bricks or block. My husband has been working in concrete for years. Try this.
