Are bars smoke free? Are all public buildings smoke free?

Where I live now is a small town that hardly ever gets caught up in things like that. The only places you can't smoke are certain restuaraunts, but most have a seperate smoking section, and there are no bans on public buildings except schools-you cannot smoke within 100 feet of them. Now where we just came from, Austin, is a different story. Last I heard, the only places you could smoke was two bars, and I'm still not sure how they got around that (city wide smoking ban) and all public buildings are smoke free, and some of them you cannot smoke within a certain distance of.

The first step WOULD probably be local politicians, but the more effective might be the local news outlets. If it were me, I'd start with the city/town you live in and target the elected officials there. City council meetings are often open to the public and there are steps you can take to present something to them to begin the process. Also, check out local environmental groups in the area to gain public exposure. Maybe even write a editorial for your local newspaper. They have recently enacted anti-smoking not only in restaurants, but also bars and clubs here in Austin and it was mostly due to public outcry. Good luck
