a guy i know's wife has run off to australia with their daughter. Who does he need to contact for help? Someone told him his first stop should be social services. Is that right? I've told him he needs to get a solicitor. Would he be entitled to legal aid for this?

I don't know UK law, but he definately should talk to a solicitor. The sad fact is there won't be much he can do to actually force her back, but he should be able to get legal rulings in his favor, and get official custody, etc., unless the wife had the right to do this. The rulings will help if the daughter and/or wife ever return to the UK.

If the person's wife does not have legal custody or guardianship of the child, then he should also involve the police, as technically the daughter has been kidnapped.

It would also be advisable that he contacted a solicitor who specialises in family law, rather than a general law solicitor, as this is a very complex area of the law.

He should contact both. Assuming he's not earning too much he would get legal aid. He's entitled to a free half hour anyway with any law firm that does legal aid work.
