Sam Raimi - his movies never disappoint and always have drama, action and comedy thrown in a well balanced mix. Plus he is a great cinematographic genius. He made Spider-Man the best comic book movie. Plus he had the Evil Dead series. Those actually some of the best horror movies of all time and has created a basis for future horror directors to follow. He also filmed Army of Darkness and Darkman. Excellent underrated movies. But you know you have an excellent director when he can make Spider-man surpass any movie superhero adaptations anyone ever dreamt of.

Steven Spielberg - and no contest.
Although I love films by Stanley Kubrick, Pressberger and Powell, Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorcese, Francis Ford Coppolla (to name a few), there is no-one else who comes close to matching Spielberg.
Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Indiana Jones (all three), E.T., The Colour Purple, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, Minority Report, Catch Me If You Can, Munich - is there another director around who is able to give roller-coaster excitement, all round entertainment, and films that challenge us?
That he was filming Schindler's List whilst editing and seeing the rushes for the CG dinosaurs in Jurrasic Park only highlights his ability and I can't think of another movie director who can do that.
The nay-sayers talk about Spielberg being unable to put out a film that doesn't have a mawkish ending, and I suppose you can criticise E.T., Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan and The Colour Purple for pandering to that thought, but I'm more than happy to cry at a film than poo-poo it for being schmaltzy!
I've also heard Spielberg criticised for being twee, yet I find his films do have a dark side. Wasn't E.T. all about loss and loneliness, Jaws about fear, Jurassic Park about man messing with nature, The Colour Purple about the emancipation of women regardless of colour, Amistad about fighting for your rights (and winning)? Schindler's List speaks for itself.
Absolutely the greatest movie director today. There must be a scene or image from a Spielberg film that everyone on earth can recognise (I think Elliott on his bike flying across the face of the moon ranks as one of the most iconic images of cinema).
I think it's safe to say I'll be there when the next Spielberg film hits the Multiplexes, whether it's Indiana 4 or the biopic of Abraham Lincoln.
Without doubt, the best movie director alive.

I really love the Star Wars movie's so i will proberbly say George Lucas. I think he put alot of work into all 6 movies and did some really good special effects.
I also think that Peter Jackson is a really good director because he is not just great at making films, he is also a really nice person and he did a great job at making the Lord of the rings and King Kong.

Ohh, what a difficult question to answer, I could pick any one from Buster Keaton to Park Chan-Wook but I think I would have to go for Francis Ford Coppola because Apocalypse Now is the best, most well made film ever!

Michael Mann. Check out The Kingdom in summer '07. Miami Vice was raw, Collateral was synthetic and Heat was ruthless.

Tim Burton (favourite) funny "in a morbid sarcastic way", Gothic and quite grotesque!! I also love Peter Jackson for his masterpiece trilogy of Tolkien's books "The Lord of the Rings" and Mel Gibson in all his work.
