It's called dessert here in Indiana, and in my family it is reserved for special occasions (or very strong cravings). There is occasionally dessert eaten other times besides after a meal--such as when a group of people go to get ice cream or when I decide to bake cookies. Most of the time, I eat a salad and then a main course (when I'm out). Nothing after. If I'm at home, the main course and that's it.

I am from the u.s. my families habits are just that i believe, more familial than cultural. as a small child with my mother "desert" was quite rare due to financial restrictions. When my sisters and I stayed with or grandparents they would fill us up with sweets. My grandfather would actually get us up out of bed about half an hour after grandmother had sent us, to give us sugary cereal or hoho's or other treats. i don't know if there is a technical word for it other than to irk grandma and spoil us.
Now I live with my teenage daughter and while we don't have desert every night we both have a "sweet tooth" and enjoy or pie or ice cream or whatever several nights a week.

I live in the U.S. In my family we just call it desert. And we maybe get a cup of ice cream or pudding 2-3 times a month. Every now and then, my mom will make tarts or something and we'll eat it with a 2 teaspoons of ice cream for breakfast. But personally, I don't like eating too much sugar...
